Social – Environmental Responsibility

At MARAWORLD we believe that the responsibility of those who promote a large-scale leisure-cultural project should go beyond simply designing the contents, organisation, production and communication.

It is absolutely crucial to be aware of the importance of carrying out a sustainable administration which minimises the impact on the environment and is respectful of the surrounding area. However, at the same time, it is important to be aware of the role that festivals play, not only as cultural and economic motors, but also as social catalysts which can channel their power to communicate and influence in order to inform and provoke discussion about various social and environmental issues.

With this objective in mind, FIB Heineken has defined two projects, which include actions which have been under development over the past two years as well as important new initiatives in key areas such as recycling, responsible consumption of water and compensation of CO2 emissions; these initiatives have been framed in this Socio-environmental Responsibility project:

1. Limpio y Verde Project: FIB Heineken working towards sustainable administration.

2. NGOs Support Project: collaboration agreements with different organisations.

LIMPIO Y VERDE PROJECT

FIB Heineken has set, as one of its key sort to mid-term objectives, the aim of reducing its impact on the environment by setting up a programme which will make the Festival more environmentally-friendly, with a sustainable administration which will give the same weight to financial, logistical and environmental issues. To this end, it has set up a project of interlinked actions which integrates the following initiatives:

Sustainable Advertising: all of the outdoor advertising campaigns, both for FIB Heineken 2008 and Saturday Night Fiber, have been carried out using solely recycled paper.

Compensation for CO2 Emissions:
the objective of FIB Heineken for its 2008, 2009 and 2010 editions is to plant more than 2.000 trees. This will effectively create a ‘fiber wood’ helping to offset the CO2 emissions generated by the Festival.

Sustainable Shopping: FIB Heineken 2008 will shop for its consumer goods for the Organisation and Festival services in a sustainable way, using recycled and recyclable materials, as well as various fair trade products.

Recycling Waste:
as well as implementing a system for separating, collecting and eliminating waste via different recipients for glass, plastic and paper, FIB Heineken 2008 will encourage the public to take on board this initiative by using reusable glasses (an initiative developed in conjunction with Intermon Oxfam), in both restaurant and bar services, thanks to the use of biodegradable and/or recyclable materials.

Mobility: As well as counting on the collaboration of the traffic authorities to ensure that the Festival has a minimum impact on communications in Benicàssim itself, FIB Heineken has developed a number of programmes to encourage organised and shared travel, there is also the possibility of bicycle hire for festival-goers, as well as putting in place different collective transport services for the public, between Valencia and Benicàssim airport and at various points throughout the town. Finally, the Festival also has access facilities for handicapped people.

Responsable Use of Water: FIB Heineken 2008 will use devices to regulate the use of water in all of the Festival’s installations.

Protection against Acoustic Contamination: we will promote acoustic protection among the public via information and the free distribution of ear plugs which will be available in the FIBinfo stand situated inside the concert area.

We know that in order to carry out this project, the participation of the organisational team and the public is absolutely essential; with this in mind FIB Heineken has developed various communication measures aimed at both targets.

NGOs SUPPORT PROJECT

- Intermon Oxfam: from 2003 the festival has undertaken an important role in supporting this NGO via a range of communication initiatives, attracting new members and fundraising events. Among these, the ARTISTS vs. PRESS football match and the administration of the Festival car parks standout as all benefits go directly to Intermon Oxfam. More info coming soon.

- Designers Against AIDS: DAA is the not-for-profit entity, founded in Belgium in 2004, whose aim is to promote public awareness of AIDs among the international communication media via the development of different actions specifically aimed at young people. The project Fibers Against Aids includes three different actions which work towards raising funds for projects in the fight against AIDs.

- Action Against Hunger: we have offered a free stand in the FIB Market for distributing information and selling different products whose funds are destined to the foundation against hunger.

- Amnisty International: we have offered a free stand in the FIB Market for distributing information about this NGO’s activities and for getting signatures, as well as the sale of free trade products.

- CASDA – (Castellón Citizens Asociation against AIDs): we have offered a free stand to this organisation for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) via the distribution of information and preventative material.

- Energy Control: we have offered a free stand in order to give out information and advice about responsible drug consumption with the aim of reducing the risks associated with consumption. There will be a service offering analysis of substances.

- Greenpeace: we have offered a free stand in order to give out information about different Greenpeace campaigns and for the sale of merchandise and products from this organisation.
