With the first confirmations having included the likes of The Prodigy, Kasabian, PiL, The Specials, Ian Brown and Dizzee Rascal, FIB Heineken 2010 has since added Vampire Weekend, Klaxons, Leftfield and The Courteeners and many more to their stellar bill. This month sees the additions of even more ground-breaking artists, legends and new sensations with the announcement of Echo & The Bunnymen, Mumford & Sons, Ellie Goulding, The Temper Trap, Foals, Hot Chip, Four Tet, The Cribs, Two Door Cinema Club, Scratch Perverts, Dirty Projectors, Sr. Chinarro and Yacht & The Straight Gaze.

‘The Fountain’ (2009) is the new album of post-punk pioneers Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant, Echo & The Bunnymen. Born in Liverpool at the end of the 70’s, they’ve been responsible for some of the most memorable melodies created on Mersey’s riverbanks.

‘Coming on Strong’ (2004) put Hot Chip on the map, although it was the self edited ‘Sanfrandisco E-pee’ (2002) and ‘Mexico’ (2000) that originally started turning heads including those of people like James Murphy’s from LCD Soundsystem. With ‘One Life Stand’ (2010) recently published they’re back at FIB Heineken guaranteeing the best of danceable pop music.

Who would have known that London born Mumford & Sons would come this far with mandolin, dobro, accordion and double bass? The young quartet, lead by the multi-instrumentalist Marcus Mumford have certainly marked their territory, British Folk, by ‘hyper-vitamining’ their ancestral melodies – bringing a classic sound hurtling into the 21st century with ‘Sigh no More’ (2009), their first album.

Ellie Goulding has just hit number one in sales in the UK. Her career, which started barely a year ago, has skyrocketed and she can be found on charts with her EP ‘An introduction to Ellie Goulding’ and her debut album ‘Lights’ was published at the beginning of this month.

Over the last fifteen years and more, the Spanish Sr. Chinarro (Antonio Luque) has gone from underground indie to the first line, where he is now surrounded by the Spanish music aristocracy without having sacrificed his style, talent or identity.

Johnny Marr returns to FIB Heineken recruited as a solo guitarist of luxury fraternal power trio The Cribs. The Jarman-Gary, Ryan and Ross combo are coming to the Festival with their recent ‘Ignore The Ignorant’ (2009) and classic English Indie
sound.

Foals should have been on 2009’s line-up but due to Yannis Philippakis’ – lead singer and guitarist – indisposition due to illness we were deprived of his excellent ‘Antidotes’ (2008), debut album that holds them as one of the most prominent promises of British pop.

Melbourne’s quartet The Temper Trap had their debut with ‘Conditions’ in 2009 brought on by talent finder and veteran producer Jim Abbis. Theirs is an Anglo-Saxon Pop-rock style in the line if U2.

Two Door Cinema Club, the Northern Ireland trio, has electro-indie melodies that locate them somewhere between Gang of Four and Franz Ferdinand. ‘Tourist History’ (2010), their debut album, is a more than reason-enough to believe in them.

Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet, maintains the level of excellence he has set out with ‘There Is Love In You’ (2010), the new album that has followed 5 years of “discographic silence”. Flavours of experimental electronic sounds with plenty of suggestive textures.

Dirty Projectors is Dave Longstreth’s personal project. His dream started to become a reality at the beginning of 2000, when he published ‘The Graceful Fallen Mango’ (2002) under his own name. The richness and singularity of his musically distinctive identity assures quality. ‘Bitte Orca’ (2009), his most recent release, locates the band among this generations’ indispensable talents.

Yacht, Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, is music among design, performance, video and many other things. A universe of constant experimentation, evolution and change has sustained their live act with some help from The Straight Gaze. Some parallel them with the likes of Tom Tom Club and Yoko Ono and they’re not too far off.

Scratch Perverts is the name of the Scottish collective of changing formation of Hip Hope DJ’s led by Tony Vegas and Prime Cuts.

The XVI edition of the FIB Heineken, International Festival of Benicàssim, has begun to take form with confirmation of its first artists and still more major acts to be announced. FIB Heineken 2010 boasts a stellar line-up of some of Pop & Rock music history’s most celebrated pioneers and artists: The Prodigy, Kasabian, PiL, The Specials, Ian Brown and Dizzee Rascal.

The techno-punks from Braintree, The Prodigy, are living a second moment of glory thanks to ‘Invaders Must Die’ (2009) with Howlett leading the beats and Flint agitating masses.

In addition we have the renowned Kasabian returning to the Festival vouched by the success of their third album, ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’ (2009). Leicester’s quartet produces their sound from a unique combination of songs and rhythms inherited from the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, a few psychedelic drops and syncopated bass.

After finishing up with Sex Pistols, John Lydon gave way to Public Image Ltd., also known as PiL. They published a classic after-punk album of reference: ‘Metal Box’ (1979), which gave rock a new perspective. Towards the end of 2009, John Lydon announced the band would reunite to celebrate the 30th anniversaryof ‘Metal Box’.

Following the draft left by punk and thanks to The Clash’s flirts with Jamaican rhythms – basically reggae and dub – Great Britain saw, towards the end of the 70’s, the manifestation of bands that redefined ska and rocksteady’s rhythms and looks. The Specials were, along with Madness, the most important band in charge of that ‘skatalítica’ fresh breeze.

The rapper Dizzee Rascal has also confirmed his attendance. ‘Tongue N Cheek’ (2009), his last album has turned to Pop thanks, among other things, to songs like ‘Dance Wiv Me’, produced by Calvin Harris.

‘My Way’ (2009) continues to improve the expectations raised by ‘Solarized’ (2004) and ‘The World is Yours’ (2007) from the ex Stone Roses singer, Ian Brown. Brown’s sound resonates between Rihanna’s previously recorded ‘Stillify’ and Zager & Evans’ version of ‘In the Year 2525’, somewhere between classic Pop sound and exuberant R’n’B.
